Initial Proposal
The genre of my magazine is fashion, specifically targeting females aged 16-23. The codes and conventions for a fashion magazine include:
- High-key lighting – This brightness brings a feeling of happiness and often youthfulness to the image. In a lot of images, they have strong colour in places, or directed hard lighting on a portion of a subject.
- Body Language – The angles and shots taken for these magazines are usually full shot or sometimes mid shots to show the different body gestures. They are generally looking directly into the camera in order to catch customers eye and promote the look they are selling.
- Masthead and Sell lines – In various fashion magazines, mastheads on the front cover are given bold and bright colours in order to catch the audience’s eye. Additionally, they also do this to complement with the overall dress of the models or they are just going with the theme that their magazine represents. For example, we usually see Vogue’s masthead in the same font and in the colour black which has a sense of familiarity to readers.
- Clothing and colour scheme – Usually magazine companies use colours which are light and will generally take models outside and promote the expensive and luxurious lifestyles.
My demographic audience that I will be targeting will be C2D which includes the skilled working class and the working class. I have chosen this audience gap due to my target audience consisting of females ages 16-23 which is when we see most of them possibly still in education. When it comes to my psychographic audience, I will be targeting (reformers, main-streamers, explorers)
Regarding the Uses and Gratifications theory, I intend to make my magazine for the purposes of personal identity as readers may find new styles that they may like, information as they will gain information about the latest fashion trends targeting their age range, entertainment for fashion lovers and social interaction as I imagine my readers to interact with other people and potentially intrigue them into my magazine.

I have decided to use Condé Nast as my publishing house, Condé Nast is an American mass media company founded in 1909 by Condé Montrose Nast. I have chosen them as they manage some of the most famous magazine companies, such as, Vogue and GQ. Additionally, the company’s media titles attract over 84 million consumers in print, 366 million in digital and around 384 million across social platforms.
My main fashion sector that I would like to target would be high street fashion which is stylish and affordable for my target audience, females aged 16-23. In addition to this, I will be representing my artist in an effortless style and will achieve this by placing her in casual clothing. Furthermore, her body language will go in hand with the style of clothing she will be wearing, casual and effortless.

Feedback
I conducted a focus group in order to gain feedback for my initial proposal and the feedback I received mentioned that my initial proposal was very specific, detailed and included everything to ensure that my target audience was clear. Furthermore, my peers also mentioned that Condé Nast is a well known publishing house which gives a good reputation to my magazine. On the other hand, I also received some criticism about my initial proposal and this included that my target audience could target a larger group of people and increasing the age range would allow me to do this. However, I think that my age range was suitable for the particular fashion that I am trying to promote, high street fashion.
